Meaningful Objects = Aesthetic + Function
(and three last minute gift ideas that a mom might like)
As a prop stylist, I’m always on the lookout for beautiful objects for photoshoots. In my personal life, I look for things that function well.
The sweet spot is when an object does both: looks great, serves a specific purpose, AND comes from an artist or brand I love and want to support.
Here are three things I’m loving. Items I’ve picked up for myself and given as gifts. If you’re in Portland, OR, and need a last-minute gift for Mother’s Day this weekend, here are some ideas and where to get them:
a. The Good Sheers from Form & Function
You might feel weird gifting scissors. The recipient might give you a polite thanks, but once they use them, they’ll be genuinely grateful. They look good, work well, and are easy to clean. The kind of thing they didn’t know they needed.
b. OMOM Canvas Tote bag from The Yo Store
I got mine in blue, and yellow for my sister-in-law. It has two strap sizes—both the perfect length—and the shape and size are just right. Plus, stripes always make me happy. Honestly, pretty much everything I buy from the Yo Store does.
c. Kinto tumbler from Prince Coffee
Comes in cute colors, just the right size at 12oz, and I like the push-on lid. Simple and beautiful. And, very important, it fits in the cupholder. And if you’re at the NW Prince location (next to the Yo Store), you might as well grab a bottle of wine, too!
You always choose the most thoughtful and best of the best items…always. Socks, scissors, tape, lotion, earrings…without fail, your gifts and recommendations stand the test of time and life.
